28 Years at Small Appliances Factory
Guangzhou Daily reported in March 2015 that today’s working-age population in China will most likely have several jobs throughout their lives. The “iron rice bowl” or job for life characterized most people’s careers in the more socialistic economy of yesteryear.
One relic of this disappearing era is Zhou Jinmei, who has retired after 28 years with the company’s Water Heating Division. The 50 year-old’s original salary at the factory was 85 Yuan a month and by the end she was known by all colleagues as a “walking dictionary” when it came to quality control.
A party was held in the training room and Zhou was presented with a plaque, a cake and a bunch of flowers to reward her years of dedicated service.
