I was specifically looking for a window unit that had a variable speed compressor (inverter technology). Why? Because the compressor will only run (consume energy) as fast /much as needed to hold the temperature at a set value. Why is that important? Because conventional single speed compressors are either on or off. You get cold dry air when the compressor is on, then you get cool and damp air when the compressor shuts off. The variable speed compressor keeps the cooling coils cold so that dehumidification occurs continually as long as the room temperature doesn't drop below the set value.. If you place a power meter (kill-a-watt) inline with the power cord, you can see exactly how ,when little cooling is required just a couple hundred watts are used (and lower). That power value will climb as more cooling is required to keep the room comfortable up to the max capability (BTU rating) of the air conditioner, in this case 1,200 watts. None of the Midea documentation explains this. I wish they would have a section in the manual/docs that does explain the range of power draw and BTU rating variance. I would have made the decision to purchase easier/quicker. Split air conditioners have the variable speed compressors but cost considerably more and require installation. This Midea 12,000 BTU unit was perfect with it's variable BTU cooling ability. Looking forward to this fall to try the heat-pump heating ability, yes, it is also a heat-pump. Again, the marketing people need to realize, there are some of us who understand how things work and seek to purchase the most efficient/reliable items, explaining how the unit technically performs would be useful somewhere/anywhere in the documentation.
