Will the new 2021 bracket work with a 2020 model?

Yes. The new bracket is the same. Some foam is preattached to the bracket. 

Do the open window brackets need to be used?

Yes. The Open Window Brackets are designed to keep your unit attached to the support bracket underneath. If you have lost your brackets from last year's installation, you can visit https://midea.encompass.com to purchase new brackets.
