When this happens, it is natural to wonder, why is my AC leaking? What causes an AC to leak? The causes can vary, ranging from a clogged drain line and a dirty evaporator to an improperly positioned drainage line during installation. By understanding the causes of AC leaks, users can determine the appropriate steps to address the issue before it develops into a more serious problem.

Water from the Drain Hose Does Not Necessarily Mean Your AC Is Leaking

Before panicking, it is important to distinguish between water being discharged normally and an actual leak from the indoor unit. When an AC operates, the cooling process produces condensation. The water is then directed through the drainage system and discharged through the drain hose.

Therefore, if water comes out from the end of the drain hose outdoors, this is completely normal. In fact, water dripping from the hose indicates that the condensation drainage process is working properly.

The situation is different if water drips or flows from the front, side, or bottom of the indoor AC unit. This may indicate a leak and should be checked, especially if the water continues to come out while the AC is operating.

Common Causes of AC Leaks

One of the most common causes of AC leaks is a clogged drain line. Dust, slime, algae, and other accumulated debris can obstruct the flow of condensation water. As a result, the water cannot drain properly and eventually overflows through the indoor unit.

Another possible cause is a dirty evaporator. Dust buildup on the evaporator can disrupt airflow and the cooling process. Under certain conditions, the evaporator may freeze. When the ice melts, the resulting water may exceed the drainage system's capacity, causing it to overflow.

The problem may also originate from the installation process. An improperly positioned drain line, incorrect hose placement, or insufficient slope to support water flow can increase the risk of leaks. Therefore, AC installation is not simply about mounting the unit on a wall. It requires precision to ensure that the entire system operates properly.

Do Not Leave an AC Leak Unaddressed for Too Long

Leaving an AC leak unattended can lead to additional problems. Constant dripping can make walls damp, leave stains, and even damage the paint. If the leak occurs around the ceiling, it can also gradually damage the ceiling material.

Another risk arises when there are electronic components, power outlets, or electrical devices near the AC unit. Water dripping onto these areas should not be taken lightly, as it can increase the risk of equipment damage and pose a safety hazard.

Simple Steps to Take Before Calling a Technician

If your AC starts leaking water from the indoor unit, you can perform a few simple checks. One of them is checking the condition of the AC filter. A filter filled with dust can restrict airflow and affect the AC's performance.

If the filter looks dirty, clean it according to the instructions in the user manual and make sure it is completely dry before reinstalling it. You can also check whether water is coming out of the drain hose as usual or dripping from the indoor unit instead.

However, avoid disassembling the internal components of the AC if you do not have the necessary technical knowledge. If the AC continues to leak after cleaning, or if the leak returns shortly afterward, a professional technician should inspect the unit. This condition may indicate a clogged drain line, a problem with the cooling system, or an installation issue.

Preventing AC leaks does not only depend on maintenance after installation but also on the quality of the initial installation. The drainage line must be installed correctly and have an appropriate slope to support the flow of condensation water and prevent it from accumulating inside the system.
